Economy may grow more than CSO's 7.2%: FM
Created on 10-02-2010 6:23 pm
Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday said he is hopeful that the economy will perform better than the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) forecast of 7.2% for 2009-10. The FM said with the 7.9% growth in second quarter and the outlook for next two quarters remaining positive, for the whole year the government expected the economy to perform in line with its prediction of 7.75%. "The growth is expected to be in the upper bound range of most predictions for the economy," Mukherjee said speaking at the consultative committee meeting of the Colombo Plan here. The Economic Survey for 2008-09 had indicated that the upper bound of growth in real GDP for the year 2009-10 could be around 7.75%. Mukherjee FM said the growing integration of the Indian economy with the rest of the world has created new opportunities and with that come rising expectations, responsibilities and new risks. "It has also brought new challenges and made the task of sustaining high growth more challenging," he said. Despite stresses, India has been able to withstand the recessionary trend better than most other economies and is a frontrunner in leading the global recovery process, the FM added.
